Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences (or Philosophical Transactions B) is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the Royal Society. The ISO abbreviation for the journal is Phil. Trans. R. Soc. B

History

Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society was established in 1665 by the Royal Society and is the oldest scientific journal in the English-speaking world. In 1887 the journal expanded to become two separate publications, one serving the physical sciences, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A: Physical, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences, and the other focusing on the life sciences, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. Nowadays, both journals publish theme issues and discussion meeting issues, while individual research articles are published in the sister journal Proceedings of the Royal Society.

Each theme issue of Philosophical Transactions B is devoted to a specific area of the biological sciences. All articles are peer reviewed as has been the case since the late 19th century. Articles can be accessed online a few months prior to the printed journal. There are currently 24 issues published per year.

The current editor in chief is Dame Linda Partridge FRS (University College London).
